Magic is show business. And since most magicians tend to work more on show and less on business, fortunately, there’s Julian Franklin, a successful magician and entrepreneur who writes “The Business of Magic” column for the Linking Ring (the publication of the International Brotherhood of Magicians). Franklin is definitely doing something right. He performs some 90 library shows during the summer, and this is in addition to his other magic-related business ventures.

I always enjoy reading Franklin’s columns and find the information in them to be insightful, practical and useful. I also appreciate being able to listen to his columns on CD. In particular, I can now learn and think about my magic business by listening to Franklin during my morning walks. Some topics are more useful than others. But overall, the CD is very good and contains lots of useful information.

The CD offers 16 tracks, the first year of columns, all read by Franklin. Most useful are the many segments that deal with marketing and clients. No flighty or poetic pie-in-the-sky rambling here, but practical advice that makes sense and can help increase your business.
A couple of topics are secondary. For example, “How Much for Your Integrity?” makes a solid point about ethics in business but feels somewhat out of place on this CD. Also, “The Ten Ps: Getting the Most from Lectures” may help you soak up more at your next magic lecture, but may or may not boost your bottom line.
The audio on the CD is clear, and Franklin speaks in an amiable and professional manner that is easy to listen to. Franklin has something to say and says it well. I definitely recommend this CD.
