Of course, in my opinion, anything that Steve Spill performs is a winner - I'm a big fan of his show at the Magicopolis Theater in Santa Monica, California. And on this DVD, he tips his entire needle routine, which is a great one.
Pins and Needles
In classic Hindu needle fashion, you swallow a series of needles and then a length of thread. At the end, you pull out the thread and the needles are threaded onto it. The effect certainly falls into the category of "packs small and plays big."Once you get over the psychological hurdles (and there is some danger), Spill's effect is not difficult to perform. The DVD comes with a special holder and you have to provide your own needles and thread and a couple of other objects that are easily found and purchased and should only cost a few dollars.
The Point
The presentation, which is all Steve Spill, is hilarious. It's one that he's fine-tuned over some 25 years. You even get to see and compare his performances from back in 1988 and 1998, as well as against one filmed last year.I like Spill's method that doesn’t require you to load ahead of time. You end quite clean but there is some minor work that only takes a few seconds out of site of spectators. However, you should be able to perform a few more tricks should you not want to close with this effect.
Hard to Swallow
I have personally never wanted to perform Hindu Needles, but I have to admit, after watching the DVD, I'm intrigued. I tried out Spill's introductory exercises and was surprised at how secure the techniques felt. In any event, working with needles is scary, which is why this trick plays so well.If you consider this effect, be warned that you'll have to work with needles and you'll be placed in a potentially dangerous situation. As a result, this is not for everyone.
