Here's a strong prediction effect based on playing cards, but without playing cards. It's a seemingly freeform effect with a brilliant concept and execution. Foresight (MSRP: $29.00, Murphy's) can be used on stage or in
walkaround situations. The effect will require some memorization and practice. And because of its interactive nature, this one is best for those who are experienced with working with spectators.
Hanging From Around Your Neck
With the tag line, "a freely thought-of card is found hanging from your neck," here's how the effect plays. It starts with a brief comedy bit and then you show a picture of a spread-out deck of face-up cards. The kit comes with pictures that you can use for
stand-up and another, smaller version, for
close-up. You ask a spectator to name any playing card that he sees in the picture and then ask a second spectator to do the same. There are two freely selected cards.
You quickly name one spectator's selected card. And with the second spectator, you show that his card is one that you are wearing in a holder around your neck. The holder and card may be examined.
No Sleights
The routine requires no sleight of hand but employs lots of psychology and audience management. I don't see this one as an opener because of its comedic opening. It's far better as middle material and is strong enough to use as a closer.
If the effect reminds you of Harry Anderson's "Mish Mash Card," there are similarities, and Devin Knight acknowledges that Foresight was designed to improve on the effect. The subtle gimmicking has been improved and Knight's complete routine covers just about anything that you will probably encounter from audiences.
I like this one. My only wish is that the picture for the stage version were larger to play to bigger crowds.
