Review: Make Amends by Wayne Fox

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Magicians generally love torn and restored playing card effects. In this regard, Wayne Fox's "Make Amends" offers something different. In this take on the classic plot where a card is torn and then brought back to its initial, pre-ripped state, the card is completely restored in the blink of an eye.

Whole Again

With "Make Amends" (MSRP: $29.95, Murphy’s), a spectator selects a playing card and signs its face. You tear the card into quarters and lay the pieces onto the table in a small pile. You now tap the playing card box on the card pieces, and they instantly restore into the spectator's selected card, complete with the spectator's signature.

The restored card may be given away. With some adjustments and practice, you can perform the restoration in a spectator's hand. You can see this one in action by watching its promotional video.

Pros and Cons

The approach has advantages and disadvantages. Fox's method is instantaneously. For those of you who prefer the "piece by piece" restorations, and visually, I prefer these as well, Fox's "flash" method doesn't look as methodical and magical. But perhaps we're thinking too much like magicians.

On the plus side, Fox's method is far more practical for real-world strolling environments. There are no angle issues because the restoration occurs on the table. With most "piece by piece" restorations, you can encounter problems with people standing behind you, as often occurs in walk around situations.

Real World

Reset is fairly quick, but you'll want to be out of sight of spectators. The kit provides the necessary gimmicks and Fox offers detailed explanations on how to put together the gimmick and perform the trick. There is some preparation ahead of time - probably count on an hour. You only have to do this setup once.

Fox's approach isn't for beginners because there are a couple of card sleights that are well known but their use is often avoided by magicians. For example, there’s a key move that is also integral to performing "card under glass."

Take a look at the video. If you like what you see and have the technical skills to pull this one off, you may have a new addition to your card magic arsenal.
