Review: Inked by Jordan Johnson

About.com Rating 2.5

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com Guide

If you've ever wanted to open your mouth to perform a magic trick, Inked may be for you. If my limited knowledge of horses is correct (all I know is that they have four legs and give milk), owners often tattoo numbers inside of their horses’ mouths. In much the same vein, Inked causes a pip from a card to vanish and appear as a tattoo inside your cheek. Overall, however, this one mostly leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Cheeky Trick

A spectator selects a card. You rub the card against your cheek and one of the pips from the card vanishes. You stick your finger into your mouth and yank out your cheek, and there's the missing pip for all to see, apparently tattooed to the inside of your mouth. If you like, you can cause the pip to vanish from inside your mouth and reappear on the playing card.

Open Wide

To start, I can't think of any performing situation where I want spectators gaping into the depths of my open mouth. They may see and admire the fine work of my dentist, but personally, I prefer to leave the probing of my mouth to professionals.

Second consideration is whether this effect is entertaining and packs a wallop. I was initially skeptical and the performance segments on this DVD didn't change my opinion.

I give Jordan Johnson credit for coming up with something different, and the method is viable and workable. But I’ll just mouth off and say "pass."
