Review: Capitulating Queens by James Swain and Gary Plants

About.com Rating 4.5

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Here's a great packet effect that you can always carry with you. In the effect, the backs of a set of four queens continually change colors and design. This one is very strong.
You bring out four face-up queens. After a spectator guesses which queen has the different back, he is shown to be correct. Then, each queen, one at a time, is shown to have a different color and design back. The queen of spades is shown to be the only card with a normal Bicycle back but the others now have the same back design. For the finale, all of the cards are shown with different backs.

The Count

The trick is not difficult to learn and perform. If you can perform an Elmsley Count, you perform this effect. Reset is fast. The written instructions are clear and easy to follow, but there are no illustrations to help with the sequences. The trick comes with the necessary cards and gimmicks. I like the way that the trick happens in the hands and doesn’t require a table.

"Capitulating Queens" is a fantastic packet trick with a great plot that will keep spectators amused and guessing. I've seen lots of packet tricks lately, and this is one of the best, a keeper.
