Yes, the hype is true and you can perform all these feats using Marc Spelmann's excellent "Glimpse," an altered card box that allows you peek at the contents inside.
Excellent Alteration
Spelmann's "Glimpse" is a brilliant, almost undetectable alteration that gimmicks the box so spectators are unlikely to notice that anything is different, even after holding the box. But despite this, you can peek at the contents inside with a minimum of handling. To make your own box, Spelmann offers thorough instructions. The box is not difficult to construct and only requires common office tools. After constructing the box, you'll find that it is easy to use. One other noteworthy aspect, Spelmann's alterations allow you to peek at almost half the length of the card box.
Look Away
In the main trick, you look away and allow a spectator to cut a deck of cards and then place the top three cards in three different jacket pockets. You hand the spectator the deck to place into a pocket as well. Without hesitation, you name the three cards.Spelmann explains other effects that you can perform that include a pseudo-psychometry-style routine where spectators place small objects into the card box as you look away, and you're able to identify the owners of each object. Spelmann also shows how to work with ESP cards, divine small drawings and more.
With these other effects, most importantly, he shows how to warrant the use of the card box. I was initially skeptical about using a card box for these other purposes, but I think that Spelmann offers a logical justification.
Looking Within
