The Split
You explain that your magician friend is splitting up with his girlfriend and she insisted that everything be split evenly. At this point, you show a deck of cards in its box that has been cut clean through the middle. Yo'ure holding one-half of the deck. However, even though the couple has been experiencing problems, you say that you have high hopes that they will make up.
A spectator takes half of the deck and shuffles it as you mix the other half. Both of you randomly select a card and trade them. In the end, you show that each of you has chosen halves of the same card. The rest of the deck of half cards are shown to be different and can be examined.
Come Together, Right Now
There's lots to like here. The half deck provides a novel and intriguing set of cards and premise. Reset is fast and can be done as you put the cards away with spectators watching. The trick is easy to perform. There is one sleight in the standard handling. It is a move that makes many magicians nervous, but there's strong misdirection at this phase of the routine. And the instructions explain a non-sleight handling that is just as good.
For something different that goes beyond your average "do as I do" card trick, you may want to take advantage of the built-in story and intriguing props that come with Docc Hilford's "Split Up." MSRP: (US) $25
