Interview with Justin Miller

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Justin Miller is a magician’s close-up magician. The well known magic creator has published numerous effects that include: X Marks The Spot and Time and Space. He was a contributor to the Live at the Jailhouse: a Guide to Restaurant Magic, which is viewed by many as one of the finest references on restaurant magic. His newest effect, Captured, offers Miller’s twisted take on cap in bottle.

Justin Miller recently took time out to talk with Magic.About.com.

Wayne N. Kawamoto: Please tell me about your creative process. How do you come up with these great effects?

Justin Miller: This by far the one question I get asked to answer more than any other. To ask what is the process of creativity for my magic is a complex problem because I do not have an "ok, I did this now, I have to do this and then so on and so on."

As I get older the way in which I create has changed drastically. When I was younger it was an inspiration of what was already in the public’s eye magic wise, but as I sit here today, the starting point is life, mine and others. Life is changing constantly, millisecond by millisecond, and my magic and how I see life is following that speed.

WK: What are people’s reactions to “Captured?”

JM: It sounds cliche, but the moment that I create for people in Captured is beyond words for me to describe. Emotions are the first thing I see from people when they see the cap melt through the bottom of the bottle. I actually had a spec put the bottle in a towel in front of about 10 people, break the bottle, JUST to get to the cap inside...I LOVE IT!

WK: What are magician’s reactions to “Captured?”

JM: Lol, I have been traveling with Captured to a ton of conventions, and my own lectures this past year and without a doubt, it has fooled some big name magicians. Are they fooled by the trick itself? Yes. But beyond this and this was the big surprise, they were fooled by the method more than anything. Once they see HOW it’s done their eyes light up and the smiles come out.

WK: What about new tricks with playing cards that you are working on?

JM: (sneaky grin)

WK: Anything else that you would like to talk about?

JM: The hour is almost upon us..
They are coming from where it started...
They have truth in their hands...
The door is cracked...
Can you see?
