Review: Triangle by Patrick G. Redford

I wasn't sure what to expect with "Triangle," a thin booklet by Patrick G. Redford. But what I discovered within its pages were three cool, impromptu mentalism style routines. This is strong material with lots of performance potential.

To the Letter

In Divine Number, you ask spectators to pull out dollar bills from their wallets, remember the first letter in the serial number, fold the bill so the serial number is hidden and then hold the folded bill in their hands. You ask spectators to think of the first letter on their bills and then you appear to read their minds and tell them. With one spectator, you call out the entire serial number.

The method for divining the letter was one that I was completely unaware of. By the way, this trick was designed to be performed with US dollars and Euro notes. Other currency may or may not work.

The Sound of Money

While strong, I wasn't as fond of A Sound Change. A spectator brings out change and then takes an unknown quantity of coins in her hands. She shakes her hand near your ear and based on the jingling sound, you identify the amount of change that is held.

If you like, you can have a spectator attempt to identify the change that you're holding in your hand and you make them successful. This one can pretty much be done at any time but you do have to prepare certain things in advance, which is easy.

I liked Rain King where you appear to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards in thirty seconds. It's a variation on classic " card at any number." The shuffling is legitimate and the deck is truly mixed-up. But when a spectator names a number, you can tell him the card at that resides at that location. This one requires some memorization and sleight of hand.

Comic Book Format

I like the way that the effects are explained in a colorful comic book format. The methods are sound and the explanations are direct and easy to understand.

None of the effects are overly difficult, but the methods are bold and a couple require some sleight of hand. There are definite possibilities here.
