Mentalism With the Tube
You bring out a DVD collection of television episodes, in this case, it's an old Western series. I imagine that most in their thirties will have heard of this show, which was immensely popular in its day some thirty-five years ago. It's hard to believe that this fell into the public domain and can now be a part of this trick. You present a series of DVD discs, take one out, insert it into the DVD player and then show that the episodes and chapters are different by briefly playing them. As you look away, your spectator freely chooses one of the six disks, places it into the DVD player and then chooses an episode and chapter on the disk.
Even though you're turned away and can't see their selection, you describe the scene in detail. When they hit the "play" button, you're found to be correct.
Now Playing
This one probably plays best on your own household television when you have visitors in your home. You can take the DVD set to a friend's home and perform it on their television. Although you'll have to justify bringing over episodes from an old television show and then not actually watching them (you won't be able to actually watch the episodes because they've been truncated). You can also carry around a portable DVD player with a screen to perform this trick anywhere. However, you'll have to come up with a reason why you're using this particular DVD set.
The DVD set looks like a real one. There's no reason why any spectator would suspect that the DVD set is anything other than it appears, a collection of television episodes. It would be nice if the show were something that's still popular such as "I Love Lucy."
Another downside, of course, is that you can only predict the contents of episodes in this collection only. I can see spectators asking you to perform this with other DVDs.
I think this one has limited utility. But it's a great concept.
