Notes From the Magic Castle: The Pendragons 10/10/05

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

If you have not yet seen The Pendragons, you’ll definitely want to witness the magic this week in the Palace of Mystery. I’m constantly amazed at the creativity, raw energy, commanding presence and amazing magic that the pair, Jonathan and Charlotte, bring to the stage.

I wasn’t able to visit the Magic Castle until last Thursday, but fortunately, The Pendragons are performing a two week run which will allow you to catch their act this week. The show I saw combined some new elements with some stunning Pendragon standards.

The opener, performed by Jonathan, told the story of Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s legendary warrior. Through magic, he showed how the Samurai avoided confrontation by catching flies with his chopsticks and intimidating his attackers. I’m impressed with the way that Jonathan finds new themes and adapts them into his presentations.

The Pole Levitation performed by Charlotte was incredible. The Pendragons have literally taken the effect to new heights. After levitating, Charlote moves forward, away from the poles, and releases her hands, and Jonathan quickly passes a hoop over the suspended Charlotte. This is the best version of the Pole Levitation that I’ve seen.

The show features classic Jonathan that includes his cigarette paper tear. But my favorite is his recitation of Cyrano’s famous “insult” speech while performing a multiple card location. This is one of the finest routines ever because it’s intelligent and theatrical and presents excellent magic.

The Shadow box offered another impressive large scale illusion. The closer, of course, was Metamorphosis. I have heard many performers say “don’t blink, or you’ll miss the fastest...(fill in the blank).” I don’t know if the Pendragons originated this line, but there’s no routine where it’s more appropriate. If you’ve never seen the Pendragons perform Metamorphosis, it’s truly one of magic’s “must sees.”

The Pendragons will perform in the Palace of Mystery for a second week from October 10-16, 2005. If you’re in the area, you’ll want to catch their act.
