Trick Review - "The WiZ"

About.com Rating 1

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Sometimes, the thinking and engineering behind a trick is far better than the effect itself. This is certainly the case with “The WiZ.”

Promising a “revolution in magic,” “The WiZ” is a prop that is designed to produce and possibly vanish small items such as silks and sponge balls. Unfortunately, while the prop itself is clever and well made, the prop’s productions look nothing like competent magic and in no way replace the conventional means for accomplishing the traditional effects. Despite the name, this wiz has little magic.

The Ring

“The WiZ” works with a “PK Ring,” which you have to purchase separately. Essentially, “The WiZ” provides a tiny compartment that revolves around your finger so you can show the front and back of your hands empty. In theory, the idea is intriguing. In execution, it’s awful.

The secret to using the WiZ involves inertia–you have to quickly turn your hand to make the device roll back through your fingers, which bears no resemblance to any natural movement. In fact, spectators will simply wonder why the magician is quickly turning his hands over in such a startling and odd manner. Don’t take my word for it, simply watch the video by clicking here.

Three Productions

The DVD explains three productions: a one-inch sponge ball, a six-inch silk or a small bit of flash paper. As you can see in the video, you show your hands empty by quickly turning over your hands and then producing the item.

The DVD mentions, but doesn’t offer any techniques for making an object disappear. From what I can tell, vanishes aren’t very practical because the device is small enough that you can’t quickly load it. And the process of showing your hands empty afterwards would involve the same awkward and fast hand motions that shout "THERE'S SOMETHING IN MY HANDS THAT I'M HIDING!"

Not Conventional

The ads imply that “The WiZ” can replace conventional props but it doesn't. Of course, every magician knows the standard, prop-based method for making a silk appear and vanish, and “The WiZ” in no way comes close to duplicating its effectiveness. And for flash paper, I’d much rather go with the traditional “Fickle Fire” that lights on its own and allows for effects where the flames are transferred from hand to hand.

There may be something magicial that can be done with this device, but if you want to perform a natural-looking production, look elsewhere. For now, "The WiZ" is a clever gimmick that’s trying to create a competent effect, but can't.
