Trick Review: "Suits You"

About.com Rating three out of Five

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

“Suits You” is an adequate “chaser” or “follow the leader” card effect. Personally, I’m not fond of these kinds of card tricks that display a series of cards, in this case nine, and then make piles and then show the cards at the end. On the plus side, the trick is relatively easy to learn and perform and is good for beginners.

Three Piles

You deal nine cards face down into three piles (three cards in each pile). The spectator is shown that each pile consists of three identical value cards of the same suit. The top card on each pile is turned over, face-up, and placed in front of the pile it came from.

The three face-up cards, the “leaders,” are moved around so that each card is in front of a different pile. Each pile is now turned over to show that the cards have magically come back together. The cards have followed their “mate.” You can watch the video here.

Easy to Learn

The trick is easy to learn and perform, although it’s not a self-worker. A plus at the end, you’re clean so spectators may examine the cards. The effect comes with gimmicked cards, as well as a first rate DVD that shows a performance and thoroughly explains the handling.

This effect is good for beginners. There is no complicated sleight-of-hand and the required moves can be mastered fairly quickly. Reset is fast. With some practice, you can put the cards away and be reset.

Will it Suit You?

“Suits You” is effectively a transposition effect. While I like performing transpositions with playing cards, I’m not fond of tricks that form and use piles of cards. For my close-up venues, these effects take too long to setup before the pay-off. Another negative, the effect requires an uncluttered and dry table top, which I often don’t have when I’m “table-hopping” at restaurants or when entertaining at cocktail events. It’s fine, however, if you’re seated at a table performing.

Furthermore, I wasn’t that impressed with the handling, which I think relies a bit too much on the “Flustration” count-at two points in the routine, it’s performed three times in succession, which I think is excessive. This can, however, be reduced to one set of three counts. Is it a problem? Probably not with most laymen.

The effect provides gimmicked cards, but these are only gimmicked to assist with the handling. The fact is, “Suits You” could be performed using ordinary cards by applying a well-known set of moves used in some popular packet tricks.

Overall, “Suits You” is best for beginners and intermediate performers who perform while seated at tables. It’s an effect that’s easy to carry around with you.
