Andrew Normansell’s “Tempest Concept” promises “The ultimate in challenge card magic!” Exactly what is the “Tempest Concept” and is it truly the ultimate? As it turns out, Tempest is a logical and workable system of card control and glimpses that allow you secretly control the location of a selected card and determine what it is.

There are some good ideas on making a card vanish from the deck, performing card to pocket without palming and obtaining a duplicate signed card for a card to beer bottle or signed card to impossible location. The DVD also presents several card revelations, many of which involve spectator’s pockets

The Control

The “Tempest Concept” is a good one that works. Advanced card workers probably won’t learn anything new, but there are some interesting ideas on allowing spectators to shuffle a deck and still make sense of the selected card’s location. Beginners with some foundation in sleight of hand and intermediate magicians may benefit the most from this DVD.

For the “Tempest Control” itself, Normansell offers a basic card control that’s based on a Hindu shuffle, and a couple of easy options to glimpse the selected card. No knuckle busters here. With the card controlled to a specific location and the card already known, a spectator can be allowed to shuffle the deck in a specific way that shouldn’t alter the location of the selected card. And if the location shifts, there are means to find the card again.

The Tricks

The tricks have “descriptive” names such as: “Tempest,” “Maelstrom,” “Tornado,” “Typhoon,” “Cyclone” and more, which tell you nothing. Most of the effects involve placing the shuffled deck into a spectator’s pants pocket and either reaching-in to find the selected card, specifying the location of the selected card through “x-ray” glasses, or pick-pocketing the card in a flash.

I’m not sure what attitudes prevail in Great Britain where Normansell taped the performance segments, but in the United States, I would never consider reaching into a spectator’s pants pocket to perform a card trick. It’s just too weird and invasive.
