DVD Review: “Neo Change” by Daryl Sato

A ten-minute DVD that explains a single move, a card color change, "Neo Change" is visual, but comes with certain angle considerations.

With the deck held sideways in your left hand, card faces towards spectators, you slowly pass your hand a few inches from the deck and the card visually changes. If you like, there's a second phase that changes the first card into a second one.

Change, Change, Change

First the good. The change is convincing and can be done at any time. There are no duplicates and you start and end clean with nothing in your hands. The ads state that there's no palming, but I disagree. A key part of the move involves gripping a card and hiding it, which in my book, is palming.

While the change looks decent, there are considerable angle problems. Spectators will need to be directly in front of you, which greatly reduces the practical uses for this change. "Neo Change" bears some similarity to the "Wink Change" and can be performed under similar conditions. However, because the "Wink Change" executes the change under a card fan and not your hand, it's far more practical for real world performing situations.

Good, Old Erdnase

Shot in the backyard of a home with lots of background noise and a distorting wide angle lens, the quality of the video leaves lots to be desired. But Daryl Sato adequately covers the bases within ten minutes of footage that includes the performance, explanation and subtleties.

The other consideration, while I like the fact that the "Neo Change" occurs with the hand passing slowly, inches away in front of the cards, a good old Erdnase change is probably just as impressive to lay spectators. And you won’t have to deal with those pesky angle issues.

You can spend twenty bucks to learn an adequate color change that you can show off to your magician friends. But if you're a card worker, you probably already have tools that you'll keep using. And if you want to learn stunning color changes that work well in the real world, learn the Erdnase and Wink changes and check out Marc DeSouza's Shapeshifter.
