DVD Review: Chicarnery-John Carney

About.com Rating 4.5

Recently, John Carney has been re-releasing his instructional videos on DVD. We were impressed with his “Classic Carney” DVD and “Chicarnery” offers another winner with some solid close-up effects. If you already own the original video that was released years ago, there’s nothing new here. This DVD is for experienced intermediate to advanced close-up magicians who have a strong foundation in sleight of hand.

Bill to Cash

Calligraphic Cash” is a bill to pen effect. A signed bill vanishes in a flash of fire and changes places with a pen’s ink cartridge. Yes, in the end, the signed bill is found inside of a pen. I like the clean gimmick and handling of the pen that practically leaves you clean and is almost undetectable. If you’re considering “bill in lemon,” I think this one is almost as strong and there’s no involved setup or resulting mess.

The effect is practical for walkaround and carrying a pen is a lot easier than carrying a traditional bill tube. The only downside is the use of fire and flashpaper that may be an issue at some venues.

Chill Out

Chill Pack” is an easy production of a deck of cards that seemingly appears from thin air. You don’t need to use your sleeves or any holders, although you have to be wearing a jacket.

An offbeat production and vanish, in “Polite Penetration” a dollar bill is rolled into a tube which mysteriously produces four quarters. The coins are stacked on the back of a spectator’s hand and covered with the dollar tube. By simply touching the coins with a pencil, the coins penetrate through the spectators hands. At the end, the tube is empty and everything looks normal. You could use this for walkaround, but you do have to manage some gimmicks in your pockets.

Sanvert

A fast and baffling transposition of red and black aces in a four-card packet, “Sanverted” is impressive. This multi-phase routine relies on a key move that will take some work to master (I was unfamiliar with the move prior to watching this DVD) and there are no gimmicks. This one is practical for walkaround and is a good follow-up to a four-of-a-kind production or after a “twisting” routine.

Color Change

I particularly liked Carney’s “Mercurial Cards,” a visual and unusual card routine where cards in a pack change colors, and then the entire deck turns into a pack of cards with backs on both sides and then into cards with blanks on both sides. In the end, everything returns to normal. It’s a strong effect that doesn’t require spectators to select or name a card.

“Mercurial Cards” will take lots of work. While I was familiar with some of the required moves: wink change, Erdnase color change and others, there were many that I didn’t know. Of course, in the hands of Carney, everything looks great and he makes it all look easy.
