Trick Review: Third Degree Burn

By , About.com Guide

Third Degree Burn is a mysterious and versatile effect that ends with a freely chosen card represented on the tips of your thumb and first finger in the form of blisters. Jason Palter has come up with a mind-boggling and stunning effect.

Visualize A Card, Any Card

A spectator is asked to visualize any playing card in his head and burn the card into his mind. You bring out a lighter and after igniting it, the spectator is asked to visualize his card in the dancing flame. You briefly thrust your fingers into the flame and wince from the pain.

For the climax, you turn your fingers around to reveal that the skin on your thumb and finger is now blistered in the shape of the named card. For example, if the spectator named the ten of hearts, there’s a blister of a ten on the tip of your first finger and a blister of a heart on the tip of your thumb.

Great Gimmick

The effect uses no deck of cards and the card is freely chosen. The effect relies on a quality, well made gimmick that fits in your pocket. I’ve seen other gimmicks that result in a similar blistered outcome, however, these devices were always limited to a few cards and required that spectators be influenced. Palter’s gimmick, on the other hand, allows any playing card to be the outcome.

Jason Palter offers excellent and detailed explanations in an accompany book and on a DVD. He presents everything that you need to know. He also offers a first rate system for manipulating the gimmick and setting it by feel that is logical and easy to remember and work with.

The Setup

You will have to practice at setting the gimmick on the fly as you talk with spectators and some cards are easier to setup than others. The gimmick can be carried with you all times and is always ready to go and the effect requires no reset.

In my strolling sets, the real estate in my pockets is very valuable and it’s hard for a new effect to knock out established props. But Jason Palter’s Third Degree Burn is an impressive and amazing effect that may just earn a pocket of its own. I’m excited about this one.
