Trick Review: Tap It by Rodger Lovins

About.com Rating three out of Five

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

This is a new take on a classic that most magicians will probably have owned and performed, particularly when they were kids. Lovins has updated the props so they look like real, everyday objects and adds a routine that is a transposition and not just a coin change.

Penny to Dime

A spectator gets to choose between a penny and a dime. The dime may be borrowed. A spectator signs their initials on the dime and the magician places it into his pocket. The penny is placed into the spectators hand. The magician taps the penny with a Sharpie pen and the penny changes places with the dime. The signed dime is in the spectators hand and the penny is in the magicians pocket.

The trick is easy to perform. Of course, it’s a variation on that old magic trick with the dime, penny and red plastic block that most of us bought and performed as kids. In this case, the Sharpie pen has been gimmicked to perform all the work. Lovins routine, instead of simply changing a penny into a dime as it’s held in a spectator’s hand, is now a transposition that involves a signed dime and penny.

Easy to Do

The trick comes with the special coin, gimmicked pen and instructions. You might have fun with this one during impromptu situations as the dime can be borrowed and signed. This one is great for beginners.
