Animated Chop Cup
The routine will definitely appeal to magicians who can admire the thinking, design and mechanics behind the effect and want to learn some concepts that allowed Copin to create an innovative new level of magic. My favorite part of the routine was when Copin performed the traditional Charlie Miller penetration where a ball is dropped into a cup and falls through the bottom. But in Copins routine, the Charlie Miller move is reversed and the ball jumps back up. There was also a brilliant use of thread that allows a ball to vanish in a traditional way, but be immediately reproduced.
Routining
I think Copins routine is technically brilliant, but I think that he brings out the moving balls too early. I think the routine would have more impact if Copin stayed with traditional chop cup in the beginning and then midpoint, began to let the balls take on a life of their own and go into the wild threadwork material. Interestingly, the ending is a traditional large load. This routine requires you to sit down at a table. And because of the setup, its not practical for walkaround or restaurant work. The DVD comes with a sample of invisible thread, which is why its so expensive.
Magicians who are into chop cup and thread work will appreciate what they see and learn on this DVD. Get this one if you want to ramp up your chop cup routine, but be warned that youll have to deal with a significant thread setup.
