Ed Ellis offers a powerful and commercial close-up card effect that involves a signed card and multiple color changes-the back of the card visually changes colors and the spectator’s signature on the face vanishes and reappears. This one is great for strolling and restaurant work and the spectator gets to keep the signed card as a souvenir.
Red and Blue, Signed and Un-Signed
In “You Blue It,” a spectator selects a card from a red backed deck and signs the face with a blue marker. The signed card turns into a blue backed card as you exclaim "you blue it." But there’s more. The signature vanishes from the card and the card then turns into a red backed card. And then, the signature reappears and the back returns to blue. At the end, the spectator can take the card home.Color Changes
The routine relies on no gaffs and when you’re done, the deck is effectively clean. From this point, you can use the deck to perform another card trick.This effect is strong and visual and Ellis offers some stunning color changes that make the card and signatures change before spectators’ eyes. Reset is fast so this one can work well for restaurants and strolling. I also like the fact that spectators get to keep a souvenir card.
The effect is not difficult for those who have a foundation in card sleight-of-hand, but you will have to practice the color changes. Throughout, Ellis offers excellent explanations on performing each step.
Take It To the Restaurant
The DVD also offers useful but limited advice on obtaining restaurant work-a series of segments where Ellis discusses some aspect of “breaking in” and working. For those who are familiar with Ellis’ “Materialize” effect, there’s an alternate version here that is designed to appeal to other magicians.“You Blue It” by Ed Ellis is an excellent and visual card effect that is powerful and has lots of commercial possibilities. This one is a definite keeper.
