Trick Review: Crystal Card by Pieras Fitikides

About.com Rating 3

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com Guide

Piera’s Fitikides’ Crystal Card offers an intriguing prop, a laminated card that can be shown blank and then displays the suit and value of two chosen cards, in sequence. It’s a brilliant concept that is easy to use and does everything that the ads say, but has some minor drawbacks.

Take a Card

The Crystal Card is a laminated card that is the size of a playing card that has a large green field. While the card looks like nothing that spectators or even magicians have seen before, it can be introduced to spectators as a modern day crystal ball that’s been projected onto a card or as a thin slice of a mysterious rock that reveals thoughts.

The revelation is easy to control and the trick allows for two different cards to be revealed, which is a real advantage. I particularly like this aspect. The card relies on a small gimmick that is cleverly disguised and easy to carry around and employ.

Not Crystal Clear

Because of the method, the revelation can be brought out when the card is in an envelope and you can make the revelation appear earlier and reveal it to spectators later when you wish. The accompanying instruction book describes seven good effects that make use of different handling and props.

While there’s much to like, unfortunately, the revelation looks nothing like that in the picture as it’s far less clear and with much lower contrast. The effect has to be performed under good lighting-either with indirect daylight or in fairly bright interior situations. In my dark restaurants, the image could not be seen or made out.

Real World?

Crystal Card is the type of gadget that appeals to magicians with its ability to reveal two cards in an intriguing manner. However, there are other ways to reveal a card that have just as much impact, admittedly, with only a single revelation and not two.

In my strolling situations, I don’t see myself carrying this around as I would not want to deal with the additional gimmicks and my audiences won’t be able to see the revelations because of the lighting issues.
