Review: Colour Burn by David Forrest

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Here's a stunning color change where you transform the back of a playing card from blue to red. The catch here is that spectators see the card change in stages.

While the change is part of an entire routine where a blue-backed deck changes into a red-backed one, the climax is the conversion of the single card. In the end, the effect will be impressive to lay spectators, but will be appreciated most by other magicians familiar with the standard card changes.

Colour Change, Change, Change

A blue-backed deck is removed from its case. The deck is spread and spectators are asked to call out the names of cards that they see. You take out the named cards and, one by one, change their back colors from blue to red. You then announce that you will change a single card’s back in slow motion.

With a wave of your hand, the blue card visibly changes and when you pause half way, the card is shown to be half blue and half red. You complete the color change and show that the card has indeed changed from blue to red. With a snap of your fingers, the entire deck then changes from blue to red.

Making Changes

The routine and color change are not difficult to learn and perform, but you will need some basic card handling skills. The color change can also be used to "print" a card from a blank card, which is explained in a routine called "Print Run."

The DVD comes with cards that allow you to easily make your own gimmick. Unlike "Wipe the Slate Clean," another color card change that occurred in stages and that I recently reviewed, the gimmick in Colour Burn is sturdier, and you can later make more of them if you need to. There's simply no comparison, "Colour Burn" is superior to "Wipe the Slate Clean."

More for Magicians?

A great color change is always impressive to lay spectators. But I suspect that the change here will be met with far more excitement by other magicians.

If you want to impress your magic brethren at your next assembly or ring meeting, you may enjoy David Forrest’s Colour Burn.
