DVD Review: "As I Recall..." Slydini

About.com Rating 4.5

Another classic is Slydini’s Knotted Silks. Here, two ends of a single silk are continuously tied into a knot and mysteriously untie themselves. Too bad that the grainy film footage lacks sound. It would have been fun to hear Slydini’s patter. This is performance only.

Another gem is Slydini’s Paper Balls to the Hat (Box). Here, Sydini uses napkins to make a series of paper balls. One by one, the balls vanish, and at the routine’s end, are found inside of a previously empty box. This is another amazing sequence that shows Slydini at his best. Cellini teaches the effect. Interestingly, Cellini alters the routine.

The Slydini Influence

The discs also feature interviews with Slydini’s students who talk about how he affected and influenced them. Particularly interesting segments include Charlie Cambra and his wife who credit Slydini with giving Cambra the magical skills to change their finances and pay for their home. And Cellini talks about learning from Slydini and of his generosity.

“As I Recall...” is a worthwhile tribute to an amazing, innovative and influential magician who’s routines live today. It is indeed a joy to watch this master at work and learn from his routines.
