Ice Coins by Christopher Congreave

A clever transformation that provides a fitting finale to a solid coins across routine, Ice Coins offers four clear plastic gimmicks that are the same size as standard coins (various sizes are available for purchase). With Ice Coins, you are not only purchasing the gimmicks, but can learn Congreave's excellent coins across routine that is taught on the accompanying DVD.

Coins on Ice

Congreave performs and explains his first rate coins across routine that combines elements of David Roth's coins across and traditional Three-Fly. This routine without the Ice Coins gimmicks is worthy on its own. After astounding spectators with the routine, the coins are placed into a spectator's hand to be held. At the end, the coins have somehow turned into the clear plastic ice coins. It's a stunner.

The remaining eight effects are variations on classic coin changes and transformations that have been applied to the ice coin gimmicks. Many are copper-silver-style coin effects with a few additions.

More Transformations

I like the effect that makes it look as if you are instantaneously pulling the silver out of a coin in the form of a ball bearing and ending with the clear plastic disk.

Editor's Note. Since this review was published, Joe Givan informed me that this effect is already explained in Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. It's called "Silver Extraction."

There's also a fun contact lense routine where it appears that the disks are being pulled from the eyes and turned into a giant contact lens (the set comes with a jumbo-sized disk).

On the other hand, do we really need to learn how to perform a matrix using clear disks? The matrix routine is a good one, but this appears to be over reaching. Just because you can do a matrix routine with clear disks doesn't mean that it's a great idea. For one thing, the transparent disks are far less visible than shiny coins.

Getting Coins Across

I'm not certain that I'm inclined to perform the Ice Coins ending in my close-up coin routine, but I picked up some nice ideas from Congreave's routine that will improve my version of David Roth's coins across. Get this one for Congreave's excellent coins across routine and if you like the ending. It;s good.

This one comes in British 2-Pound, American silver dollar and half-dollar sizes.
