Review: The Professional Repertoire of Etienne Pradier

Sometimes a trick or DVD just speaks to you. And this is the case for me with "The Professional Repertoire of Etienne Pradier."

On this DVD, Pradier teaches excellent effects for walk around and strolling and the collection goes beyond the standards that you often find on most DVDs. I found some fresh new ideas here that are also thoroughly commercial.

Bill Switch

Disk 1 starts with Pradier's opener, a powerful variation on the bill switch. A borrowed note changes denomination in the usual fashion and then turns into a freely named currency. This is a stunning enhancement to the typical bill switch routine.

A variation on a well known gag, in Finger Snap, you grab a spectator's hand and appear to dislocate a finger. While the routine's name tips the method, Pradier teaches the lead-in effect that allows him to receive stunning reactions to the stunt.

In The Broken Glass, you lift up a wine glass and its base falls off. Before anyone knows what's going on, you quickly restore the glass to its original state.

A Spin on the Bottle

Another crowd pleaser is Bottle Through Table. Here, under cover of a cloth, an entire wine bottle penetrates through the table.

Perhaps the most conventional effect on this DVD, but it's done well, is Ring Flight. As in the traditional plot, a spectator's ring vanishes in your hands and appears dangling from your key case. Of course, this one requires the standard gimmicked prop.

The true mind blower that is worth the price of the entire DVD is Impromptu Signed Card in Sealed Bottle. As the name implies, a spectator's signed card appears inside of a sealed bottle of beer or tonic water. You won't need any assistants and there are no switches.

This one is well worth the effort, although for a strolling effect there’s considerable reset. You'll want to save this one for that special table.

Wedded Bliss

The Wedding Test is Pradier's version of the "Anniversary Waltz," a popular effect where two selected cards mysteriously meld into a single card. When Pradier performs this effect, he shows the cards to be normal ones before the final merge. There's excellent handling here.

While it's sleight heavy, Pradier's Card to Pocket may be among the most entertaining routines you can perform with a pure deck of cards. Cards change, fly to his pockets and more, and the routine culminates with a finale.

By the way, Pradier doesn’t teach the sleights during the course of explaining each effect, he offers individual lessons in a separate section. This is a brilliant concept that works splendidly. In the sleights section he tips some well known sleights, as well as teaches his impressive false cut and a great version of the slip force. I'm inspired and working on both.

Impromptu Stooge

A commercial effect that involves audience members, in Impromptu Stoogep an unsuspecting spectator turns into the revelation of the trick. Because you don’t know what a spectator will do when he’s secretly coaxed into the trick as others watch, this routine has an element of jazz magic.
