Review: The Castle Routine by Ed Ellis

Ed Ellis is an accomplished sleight of hand artist who is also an award winning drummer who has played on stage with The Buddy Rich Band. He bills himself as the "world’s fastest hands" and who’s to argue? Watch Ellis in action and you will probably agree.

Fastest Hands

This DVD tips Ellis' visual and entertaining 10-minute card routine that he recently performed at Hollywood's Magic Castle. The routine is flashy, impressive and magical.

The routine begins with the four aces acting as "quick change artists." The aces are produced from a single playing card. And then, in a series of fast phases, the aces seemingly change into each other and transpose.

In the second phase, the four aces become "escape artists" and despite being placed into the center of the deck, continually come together at the top of the deck.

This is followed by several ambitious card style phases with a signed card. The end is a stunning closer where the signed card is found with a rubber band and a borrowed ring.

Productions and Moves

The sleight heavy routine has lots to like and most will probably pick and choose the effects, sleights and productions that work for their acts. Ellis’ "Y Production" produces the aces in a flashy manner that is accompanied by some clever wordplay, and another production, the "Pitch Ace Display" causes a selected card to transform into four cards.

Ellis teaches a visual full deck false cut that can be used in lots of routines. He also tips a useful turnover pass. Overall, his routine is saturated with utility sleights that can form the basis of other routines.

Ring Signature

While the card work is fantastic, the "Ringnature" move is worth the price of the DVD. Here a rubber band and a borrowed finger ring are wrapped around the cards. The ring vanishes and at the end, the rubber band and ring are wrapped around the selected and signed card.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ellis' performance of this routine at the Magic Castle last time he was in Los Angeles. The routine is a crowd pleaser and he received a great response. On the DVD, Ellis does a thorough job of teaching the moves.

You may not have the "world's fastest hands" as Ellis does, but you can learn a lot from him and carry away moves that will keep you practicing for some time to come and will work well in your own performances.
