Iced Over by Russ DeSimone and Ed Bedrick

About.com Rating 3.5

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

An effect that leaves a performer with ice in his hands, “Iced Over” provides a set of realistic-looking fake ice cubes. Made of some type of plastic that doesn’t melt, the “ice cubes” lend themselves to walk-around and strolling.

Ice to a Tea

In the trick, the magician shows his empty hands and then pours some water into a cupped hand. After closing the hand and blowing on it, the hand is opened to reveal that the water has turned to ice.

The fake ice cubes look quite realistic. When sitting next to real ice you can see a slight difference, but when viewed by themselves, particularly when they’re wet, they’re indistinguishable from actual ice.

Cold as Ice

The accompanying effect is easy to learn and perform, but you’ll need to wear a suit jacket. Perhaps the hardest aspect of working with the fake ice cubes is to not lose them. They are realistic enough that when dropped, they’re difficult to find. And if placed into a glass, they can be accidently thrown down the sink.
