Television Pioneer
It was Wilson who proved to the networks and sponsors that magic could amaze and entertain audiences via television. He effectively delivered quality magic to the masses and always performed in a classy, professional and entertaining manner. This is why the re-release of his Magic Circus shows is such a pleasure to watch.Wilson's six Magic Circus TV shows from the early '70s are now available on three DVDs, each of which features two episodes. While it's difficult to mention all of the highlights, you get to see the versatility and charisma of Wilson and Nani Darnell, as well as the brilliant results of Wilson's collaboration with magic consultant Alan Wakeling and illusion designer and builder John Gaughan.
Close-up and Stand-Up Classics
At times, Wilson performs stand-up and close-up, sometimes while completely surrounded by spectators. When he made his pact with television audiences that stated that his magic was being seen by television audiences just as those in his studio saw it, he meant it.In these segments, Wilson performs classics such as professor's nightmare, egg bag, color changing knives, bill to lemon and more. Wilson also performs a great routine with thimbles as well as his signature "Sucker Silk to Egg."
Illusions
Of course, there are stunning illusions. For some illusions, such as Wakeling's "Gorilla Crushing," Wilson's show was the only time they were performed on television.A Wakeling creation, the "Aquarian" illusion is a stunning metamorphosis effect with an enclosed water tank that formed the closer for Wilsons Las Vegas shows. "The Enchanted Princess" offers a sword suspension with an amazing Wakeling innovation, a 360-degree rotation of Darnell.
Youll see Wilson's signature effects such as the "Allakazam Train," where Darnell is divided into two parts in a miniature steam engine and then restored. You also get to see the "Canvas Covered Packing Case Escape" in which a wooden box is built on stage by two carpenters and enclosed in a tight canvas cover and Wilson and Darnell switch places. Wilson and Darnell present what was then the first US performance of Robert Harbins Zig-zag illusion.
More Magic
Magic Circus showcased other performers. "The Professor" Dai Vernon presented "Cups and Balls" and "Symphony of the Rings" and Shimada performed his exquisite parasol act. Other entertainers include Jay Marshall and Lefty, Carl "every move a picture" Ballantine and the funny Art Metrano. You probably know of the Metrano's act (it recently surfaced on Fox's "Family Guy") and you can see it here. The shows also feature a young Greg Wilson. For his television debut at the age of six, Greg Wilson performs a delightful tandem billiard ball manipulation with his dad.
There's no doubt that Wilsons Magic Circus DVDs are historically relevant. But the big surprise is that the shows have aged so well. It's a tribute to Wilson and his team that his shows are still so much fun to watch. This is great magic entertainment for any era and Mark Wilson's Magic Circus can be a worthwhile addition to your DVD library.
