One of the funniest effects in magic, “Kate and Edith” is a fantastic routine for bars, nightclubs and adult gatherings. Doc Eason recently re-released Kerry Pollack’s “classic” with a DVD that presents two recordings of his live performances and provides tips, audio files that you can listen to and memorize the routine and more.

Innuendo and Out the Other

“Kate and Edith” is all about the comedy patter, which makes the magic secondary. The patter is a rhymed story that’s filled with sexual innuendo that touches on creative relationships, generally sociably unacceptable terms and more. In this regard, “Kate and Edith” is more of a stand-up comedy routine than a magic trick.

As a result, as Eason explains on the DVD, the trick is not for every stand-up situation. On the DVD, Eason even talks about a corporate event that he will never work again. The trick killed, but the personnel director had no sense of humor.

Stan "the Man"

In the story, the King of Hearts represents “Stan,” and the Queen of Spades and Queen of Clubs respectively represent “Kate” and “Edith.” The trick features a few transpositions and the handling is not difficult. It’s the memorization of the routine that requires the most effort.

The kit comes with four jumbo cards that are made of plastic. While plastic cards aren’t normally an advertised feature for a magic card trick, here, the plastic is an advantage. The cards are durable and should last a long time.

DVD Extras

The DVD includes two performances by Eason that were recorded from live shows, as well as tips on using the props, scripts that you can print out (the disc features DVD-ROM capabilities) and audio files that you can burn onto an audio CD or download to an MP3 player to listen to and memorize the routine. There’s also an audio performance by RJ Owens.

If you’ve always wanted to perform “Kate and Edith,” or would like to add a bawdy routine to your grown-up act, Doc Eason’s “Kate and Edith” is worth the look.
