Trick Review: Hot Knife-Rodger Lovins

About.com Rating 4

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

A variation on the classic “Hot Rod,” Rodger Lovins’ “Hot Knife” offers a pocket knife with six different colored spots on both sides. In traditional “Hot Rod” style, a spectator selects a color and then the spots on both sides change into that color. The difference here, of course, is that this effect uses a fairly innocent-looking pocket knife and not the usual plastic bar with jewels that looks like a magician’s prop.

Cuts Like a Knife

“Hot Knife” is a high quality pocket knife. According to the specs it has real bone handles, nickel/silver bolsters and stainless steel blades. It looks like something that is durable enough to keep in your pocket all of the time. Lovins says that he’s carried the same knife in his pocket daily for some 12 years. I tried to scratch-off the spots and they seemed quite solid and secure.

The knife is a bit on the thick side so it takes a bit of practice to convincingly execute the “move.” However, the thickness is not a problem.

Brief Instructions

The brief documentation offer no pictures and barely adequate instructions on executing the “move” and how to have a spectator choose the color. Interestingly, the package says that you can vanish the knife at the end of the routine, but there are no instructions on how to do so. In fact, the presented routine is the bare minimum with no suggestions on patter, alternate handlings or performing the effect in multiple phases. You’re pretty much on your own.

By the way, "Hot Knife" isn't the only gimmicked knife on the market that allows you to perform this effect. Joe Mogar also sells a colorful version that is worth considering.

Despite the bare-minimum instructions, I like this product. The knife is a real one that doesn’t resemble a magician’s crazy prop, it’s a high-quality product and a trick that you can always carry with you. It’s definitely a keeper.
