The Heat is On
Hold an Alpha Card in your hand and the warmth of your hand changes the spades into hearts. Actually, the body of the black spade turns red and the stem turns a light grey color. Keen observers will notice that the “hearts” are actually upside down, but this shouldn’t be a problem during performance.The four and smaller spades/hearts designators change colors as well. And if you wave the card in the air or simply allow it to cool, the hearts turn back into spades. The trick comes with two identical cards. One of my cards was slightly offset so a sliver of red showed up on the edge of the spade, but I don’t think that this will cause problems.
Feel the Warmth
The instructions tell you that the trick works best at room temperature and that your hands have to be warm. Here in Southern California in the winter, where it’s still relatively warm, I could get the individual spades to turn into hearts by lightly pinching them with my fingers, but I was unsuccessful at getting the entire card to change simply by laying it in my hand, as suggested in the instructions.I had to make sure all of the spades were touching my skin to make them change to red. In warmer weather, perhaps this won’t be a problem.
I like the idea proposed in the directions that tell you to wave the card over a cup of hot liquid such as coffee to make the change. This could look quite magical and provides fodder for lots of themes about waking up the card with the coffee and more.
This one is different and a clever magic adaptation of some technology.
