Review: Mirage Et Trois by Eric Jones

Here's a superb close-up three-coin routine that is as exquisite as it is baffling. And if you can master it, you'll have fun performing this one for lay audiences and magicians alike.

Production, Across, Vanish

Structurally, it's a perfect routine with three phases: 1) three coins come out from nowhere; 2) three coins move from one hand to the other, one at a time; and the three coins vanish, one by one. It's a great routine for restaurants where people are seated slightly below you and in front and it contains some clever variations on classic "three-fly."

I like the fact that much of the time you aren't using an extra coin and Jones' routine doesn't have all of the blatant back and forth motions that are typically found in these types of routines. Most of the moves are in the hands, but one portion, during the coins across segment, you briefly rest coins on the table.

Shuttles and Retentions

Even if you don't perform the routine, there's lots to learn and apply to your coin magic. I like Jones' variations on shuttle passes and his retention pass. Most stunning is the gorgeous single coin segment where a coin mysteriously travels from hand to elbow and to the other hand in mere seconds.

You'll need to have your coin fundamentals down before taking this one on. For example, there are multiple coins held in classic palm that you have to release one at a time and more.

I walked through the steps and found that I'm going to need lots of work to smooth out the sleights, and, in particular, get the precise timing that Jones applies in his routine.

This one is excellent.
