Review: Clutch by Oz Pearlman

About.com Rating 4

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Here's a strong "find a card" effect that is combined with "pick-pocketing." Clutch not only appears to be particularly clean and fair, it teaches you a powerful method that is off the radar for most. This one will fool magicians as well as lay people and there's no complicated sleight of hand.

Fair and Clean

The spectator shuffles the deck, picks a card and returns it to the deck. The cards are placed into the card box and the lid is closed. The spectator puts the deck into his own pocket. The spectator can check and confirm that there's nothing else in his pocket - just a deck inside a closed box.

You clearly show your hands empty and sleeves rolled up. You explain that you're going to snatch the spectator’s selected card right out of the box. You reach into the spectator's pocket and instantly pull out the chosen card. If you wish, the card may be signed. Also, the deck may be borrowed.

Control

Pearlman teaches you a powerful means to control a selected card that is not considered by most and that you can apply to other card tricks. The effect is not difficult to learn and perform, and is seemingly fair throughout.

This one also has the potential to play big under lots of crowd and venue conditions as it contains lots of interaction with a spectator. It's apparently part of Oz Pearlman's own show.
