Review: Royal Card Magic Kit

About.com Rating 4

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

Here's a fine beginner's magic set that is devoted to playing cards. With its gimmicked cards, I think it provides a fast track for novices, but the documentation could feature more illustrations and be easier to follow and understand.

In the Cards

This kit comes with two decks of cards. The first is a bridge-sized deck that is decent in quality. While not marked, the back design lends itself to some simple tricks. The cards are plastic coated, but despite this, fan quite nicely. They're also stiff so they don’t lend themselves to card springing.

The second deck consists of gimmicked cards that are used in more tricks. I like the kit's use of gimmicked cards as this allows beginners to quickly learn and perform some good effects.

The Books

The main booklet, "101 Professional Card Tricks," explains lots of tricks, including those with the gimmicked cards. This one has adequate illustrations and explanations are rather brief, but there are a good selection of beginner-appropriate tricks.

The second booklet, "125 Magic Tricks" offers more tricks, however, explanations are even less detailed than those in the first book. This book delves into some sleight-of-hand, but the explanations and illustrations are completely inadequate.

There's More

Rounding out the kit is a card box and instructions on how to use it. It's a great addition. Looking at the front of the box, there's a picture of a move known as the Piet Horton Pop-Out, which is not taught in the kit. Also, there's a flashy giant fan on the back that is also not taught.

The recommended ages for this kit are 10 through adult, which is appropriate. However, a youngster who looks at the pictures on the front of the box and opens this kit is likely to be disappointed because of all of the reading that will be required. But for less than $15, this kit features lots of easy card magic.

The kit's gimmicked cards make this one standout, however, the text falls short, particularly when compared to the book in The Easy Card Tricks Set. Despite this, the Royal Card Kit is a good beginning magic set for those who want an introduction to card magic.

The Royal Card Magic Kit is available through Fun, Inc and at magic dealers.
