Review: Second Chance by Wayne Dobson

About.com Rating 4

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com Guide

This booklet teaches you a card trick with a strong ending - you reveal the spectator's card after it appears that you’ve lost it - and the effect is very easy to do.

Try Again?

You ask a spectator to think of any card, remove it from a deck and hide it in his or her pocket. You take another deck and claim that you are going to reveal the chosen card. You remove a card and discover that it's the wrong card. You ask for a "second chance." When you turn the card over, the spectator's card is written on the back.

The trick is easy to learn and perform, requires no complicated moves or mental gymnastics and instantly resets as you put it away. I like the fact that it's rare for such an easy trick to allow a free choice, a freely named card, on the part of spectators.

You'll have to construct your own gimmicked decks from two decks of playing cards. The process should take about an hour and will only require scissors and a marking pen. This is a fantastic trick for beginners.

Two More Tricks

The booklet explains a second effect, PenUltimate. Here a spectator thinks of one of four colored pens and you tell him the color that he selected. My favorite was Dobson’s patter about life for his take on classic "Gypsy Thread." You can’t go wrong with material from Wayne Dobson.
