This is a variation on an old logic puzzle. When you come back to the room, you ask the following question to either person:
Did the liar take the quarter?
If the person you ask says "no," he or she has the coin. If the person you ask says "yes," the other person has the coin. I won't try to explain the logic. It's fun reasoning out how and why this works.
