Silk - Definition

By , About.com Guide

Definition: "Silk" is a term that magicians use to refer to a handkerchief - typically, made of silk. Magic has an entire genre of tricks and routines dedicated to the manipulation, production and display of silks or handkerchiefs. While there are close-up tricks that employ silks, most of tricks with silks are performed on stage. Silks are excellent for stage work because they are colorful. Generally, magicians prefer handkerchiefs made from silk because they compress into small bundles, which are easy to hide. Also, when the silks are produced, the wrinkling is fairly minimal. Silk magic typically employs other props, usually bags and boxes.
Examples: She performs a colorful routine with silks that features the production of 75 silks in three minutes.
