The Visible Chinese Coin Mystery System offers a visual and stunning routine and it's not difficult to learn and perform. Here, a set of Chinese coins (the kind with holes in them) vanish and reappear in a classic plot of "sympathetic coins."
Sympathetic Coins
As in traditional “
sympathetic coins,” coins are individually placed beneath a laid-out handkerchief, and they vanish and reappear with others on top of the silk under the cover of a playing card. The vanishes, as you can see in the
video, are impressive and visual. At the end, there’s a straight-forward clean-up that allows spectators to examine the coins.
The kit offers a complete system that includes the specialized coins; a sheer, white silk; and decent instructions on a DVD. (The jumbo coin shown in the video is not provided.) The moves only require rudimentary coin handling skills, and overall, the effect is fairly easy to learn and perform. In addition to the silk and gimmicked coins, you will need a dark close-up pad. Of course, this effect requires a table.
Hand Crafted Coins
The ads state that the kit comes with “special hand crafted gimmicked coins.” However, for the rather pricey $89, you’re not getting custom-machined coins as you might expect. The coins have been gimmicked in a straight-forward manner that is well within the capabilities of all magicians who
don’t have access to metal working equipment. In fact, it’s likely that you may already own the necessary tools and materials.
Of course, when purchasing magic, one is buying a method, secret and procedure, but I think that the promise of “hand crafted” coins may lead many to think that they are purchasing intricate, machined coins, which is not the case. I’m not saying that the kit isn’t worth the price, but I think some magicians will be disappointed at the gimmicking that could be described in a magazine article and made at home.
Caveats aside, if you have a venue and a table to perform a visual “sympathetic coins” routine, you may like “The Visible Chinese Coin Mystery System.”
