"Max Maven - A Fabulous Monster"

Like Jeff McBride - A Magickal Life, which profiles the famous magician, "Maven - A Fabulous Monster" delves into the persona of the mysterious mentalist. The film is also by the same producer.

Indeed, it's difficult to think of a more intriguing person to showcase in a documentary. On stage, Maven appears to know what you are thinking. And besides being an amazing and mesmerizing performer, he's a prolific and brilliant inventor of magic tricks.

The documentary begins with a question, can Maven actually read minds and perform other phenomena, or are these tricks? From here, we're presented with a brief history of metaphsyical phenomena and clips of Maven's show and learn of Maven's influences.

Interviews
As you would expect, there are interviews with Maven - some of which are brilliantly intercut with performance footage from his show. There is even home movie footage and pictures of Maven as he was growing up.

The documentary never answers the question of tricks versus reality - Maven tends to be rather evasive and vague on the subject. But overall, this excellent and professional documentary offers a brief and entertaining glimpse into the man - a creative genius and a fascinating personality.
