Kevin Spencer - The Interview

By Wayne Kawamoto, About.com

WK: Any ongoing or upcoming projects, shows that you would like to mention?

KS: We are fortunate that we engage in extensive touring with our production. If people are interested in knowing where we will be performing next, they should check out the Tour Schedule on our website. Our Spring 2006 schedule is really packed and our Fall 06/Spring 07 tour is coming together really well.

We will be returning to Asia in December 2006. We've already locked in performances in Hong Kong and Taiwan. We are in discussions with Malaysia, Macau, Manila, Seoul and Shanghai. We are also pulling together the final negotiations for an Australian tour in May 2007.

Projects? It seems we always have something going on. We coordinate The Healing of Magic program and are in the process of completing a new DVD for that program after having just done an update to the manual. That DVD will be ready by January 1.

And we will begin editing our next tour DVD very soon. This one will feature our travels and performances on our U.S. Tour this year. I'm constantly amazed at the beauty of our own country and the warmth of Americans. I wish everyone had the chance to really see the States the way we do.

WK: Where do you get your inspiration for shows and routines?

KS: We have some really great consultants that we have the privilege of working with on a variety of projects. When it comes to new illusions and presentations, Andre Kole, Jim Steinmeyer and Joanie Spina are our "go-to" guys. They think on an entirely different plane than everyone else we know when it comes to creativity in the art of magic.

We might develop an idea that we would like to see executed on stage but, generally, these people are the ones that help us make it a reality.

The most important thing for us is to be true to ourselves and the way we present an illusion or routine. Our show is very "personality driven" so we strive to present our magic as a theatrical presentation (Broadway meets rock n roll), creating "theatre" in the truest sense of the word.

WK: What are you excited about these days?

KS: We are always excited about touring. Our lives are never boring in that regard, that's for sure. But I think one of the things that we are passionate about is the Healing of Magic program. There is so much satisfaction that comes with knowing that your talents/skills can be used to impact the quality of someone's life. Every magician we know who has become involved in a magic therapy program has the same reaction.

Right now we are engaged in research projects with the University of Rome and a major rehabilitation facility in Hong Kong to obtain solid, verifiable data on the therapeutic use of magic in a variety of diagnoses. And I continue to speak at various health-care related conferences and conduct workshops for therapists in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and school systems around the world. It is one of our most gratifying and exciting opportunities.

WK: Anything that you would like to mention, promote or say?

KS: I keep a BLOG on our website. It gives readers a chance to stay current on what we're doing and gives them some insight as to what's happening with us "on the road." We enjoy hearing from people who have seen us perform or are working with the magic therapy program. We get to see every email that comes into the office so I hope people will get in touch. Of course, I hope people buy the ASIA DVD too. It's a great gift for someone who loves magic, travel or unusual experiences.
