Review: Tattoo Joe by Joe Russell and Paul Harris

Here's an effect that makes a giant tattoo appear on your arm. And by simply rubbing the tattoo, it disappears. It's a visual trick that can also be used to reveal selected playing cards and more.

Tattoo You

You display your bare arm and rub your other hand across it and a large tattoo visually appears on your forearm. Rub your arm again and the tattoo vanishes. The effect relies on no chemicals or make-up and once you finish the effect, it's reset and ready to go.

The effect is easy to learn and perform. As the ads state, "if you can rub your arm you can do 'Tattoo Joe.'" The kit comes with a first rate and thorough DVD that teaches you everything that you need to know. There's also material to create 12 different, re-usable custom tattoos.

From a Distance

The quality of the tattoo images are basically as good as you can trace or draw them. Russell shows how to make an easel to more easily trace images that you print from your computer. You can use a gimmick hundreds of times before it eventually wears out.

You'll need to perform wearing a long-sleeve shirt or with a T-shirt or other shirt that meet certain common requirements. Angles are generally good from the front and Russell teaches a technique for increasing the angles.

I think this one looks best with a bit of distance, say at least a couple of feet away from spectators. Note that the picture on the DVD's cover is a bit misleading as the tattoo appears in a manner that you wouldn’t display in a real performance.

Lots of Possibilities

The effect offers amazing possibilities to reveal playing cards, catch blown kisses on your arm that appear as lip prints, pull pips from playing cards, display a client's name and logo, create blood marks and more.

The enclosed gimmick works with light skin tones. Being of Asian descent, my skin is a bit dark for the gimmick. You can purchase more material for gimmicks from drug and grocery stores. If you have dark skin, there probably is material that you can purchase that will work.

I like this one. It's a visual production with lots of possibilities to support other effects and revelations. This one can definitely make a mark.
