Essential Magical Skill: Likeability

By January 9, 2013

Beyond the moves and methods, all successful magicians possess one important skill: the ability to be liked by strangers and audiences. Can everyone master this skill?

A story on Yahoo Small Business Advisor called "6 Habits of Remarkably Likeable People" offers six approaches to improve one's likeability. I'm not sure that all apply to magicians, but there's some good advice to be found within.

You can read the story here.

Magic is certainly not abput props or about ‘frying’ the audience. Being a magician is a statement about who you are as a person and magic helps to create a unique identity.

With all due respect to articles like this, I think there’s a certain indefinable element to likeable (read “outgoing”) people that you just can’t fake. These are things like eye contact, your memory for names, your ability to make small talk easily, your memory of facts about people, your style, your grace, your sense of ease around people, and many other factors. A lot of it is subconscious. In other words, if you have to think about it, you’ll never have it. I’m afraid it’s not in our hands, but in our genes. (Saying this not to brag but as someone who wished he had more of it).
