More Magic on "America’s Got Talent"

Is it my imagination or has there been a lot more magic featured on this year's edition of "America's Got Talent?" Here are some thoughts on the past week's magic performances since my last post. Michael Grasso is a hard act to follow, but there were strong performances by Murray Sawchuck and William Scott Anderson to advance to the next level.

I'll vote to have Murray Sawchuck on TV to represent our art of magic anytime. You can watch his edited segment here.

William Scott Anderson has been in the news of late. As I mentioned in a previous post, the medical evacuation pilot has used magic to connect with injured children in Afghanistan. Anderson did a great job with an illusion and presented a theme that played on the name of the well known prop. Interestingly, Anderson wore his military uniform which helped to set him apart and ultimately worked to his advantage.

This was no performance by some magic wannabe who recently purchased a big time illusion and couldn't wait to show it off. Anderson executed a polished routine that was tight, well rehearsed and entertaining. I was impressed with his choreography that took advantage of his physical strength and stage presence. Judge Howie Mandell mentioned that he could envision an entire show based on a military theme. You can watch the video here.

Frankie Elliston performed a bit of classic geek magic that stunned the crowd. It's a bit that David Blaine performed on national television during one of his early specials and it just goes to show that there are ideas out there that the television audience has not yet seen.

We didn't get much of a chance to get to know Elliston. Since he made the next round, it will be interesting to see what he performs as a follow-up. Does he have the goods as a magic entertainer or is he simply a geeky flash in the pan? You can watch the video here.

One other notable act that I didn't discuss in last week's post is a group of college students that performed with classic black art. You can watch "Fighting Gravity" here.
