Jeff Hobson and Kevin James Talk About Las Vegas Magic

With the all of the changes and closures to the Las Vegas magic scene, Jeff Hobson and Kevin James provide some timely and insightful opinions.

What is the state of Las Vegas magic? Is the age of magic in Las Vegas, post Siegfried and Roy, passed, as some have stated? And after the closure of his long-running show, what might Lance Burton do next?

This is the first in a series of stories about Las Vegas magic. Stay tuned for commentary from many more magicians.

1. Do you feel that the popularity of magic is changing in Las Vegas? And if so, why, and what is the future?

I've always believed that Las Vegas was overgrown with too many shows over 10 years ago. When an industry cuts up its profit pie beyond its means, something has to give. This [Lance Burton's announcement] is just another example of necessary cutbacks in our economy.
Jeff Hobson

I think magic will always have a respectable place in Las Vegas entertainment. It will go through phases but it will always be available for the public. Magic transcends all age, race, language and cultural barriers. It speaks to everyone. As long as the prime movers of the art keep it fresh and interesting, it will always be popular.

2. Any thoughts on Lance Burton's next projects/gigs?

I've known Lance for many years and, besides being one of the true greats in magic, he's also a smart business man. Surely he knows what he's doing. It's just one more reflection on the rapidly changing seen in the entertainment industry and, subsequently, Las Vegas. Lance will move on and survive in whatever direction he decides to go. So will magic - it's a universal art form.

Lance has a special place in my heart. He gave me my first show in Las Vegas, filling in for him at the Tropicana. Lance will do what he wants to do. I know he loves magic with all his heart. He is a survivor. He will have no trouble finding a place to perform if that is what he really wants to do. I have never known Las Vegas when there was not a Lance Burton show playing. I wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do. It is all up to him.

Lance Burton is #1. Not only will he survive, he will thrive because that’s the kind of entertainer he is. His love and respect for magic can be seen in the attention to detail he puts in every act. And the respect he treats his audience with (i.e. no offensive language, content that is appropriate for all ages, etc.) is something all magicians can learn from.

Contrast this with other magicians such as Jay Sankey who prop themselves up at the expense of their audience, with a presentation and attitude that says “I’m important and you’re not”.
