In December 2004, an electrical transformer located in a nearby underground vault owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (“LADWP”) malfunctioned and caused a fire, which resulted in smoke that was tainted by hazardous substances. Unfortunately, the museum was contaminated by smoke and curators have no access to the museum to remove any artifacts, memorabilia or records.
The LADWP has not accepted responsibility for the contamination and the cost to clean the Museum. As a result, the SAM is preparing to file suit to recover damages and needs to quickly raise funds to litigate the LAWDP. SAM also needs additional funds to clean the museum and its magical artifacts, records and films.
