Blaine Escapes from Gyroscope

Friday November 24, 2006

According to a recent release, at 5:00 a.m. EST this morning, David Blaine arrived in Jersey City, NJ to accompany 100 children on a holiday outing. Just hours after breaking free from the gyroscope in which he was suspended 50 feet above the ground, Blaine escorted the group on a shopping trip at the start of the Target 2-Day Sale.

In a Thanksgiving spectacle that promoted Target Stores, David Blaine escaped from a spinning gyroscope that hovered some forty feet above Times Square in New York. He freed himself Thursday about 2:15 p.m. Blaine was strapped into the contraption on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Blaine, who was dehydrated and weakened, spun in the gyroscope for some 52 hours without food or water. To end the display, Blaine released himself from his shackles, jumped from the gyro and landed on a wooden platform.

Blaine appeared alongside Major George A. Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army, to meet the families and host a pre-shopping breakfast. After welcoming remarks from both men, each of the families, identified by The Salvation Army, was presented with a $500 Target GiftCard.

"I'm extremely proud of this challenge," said Blaine in the release. "With its successful outcome, I'm able to give something back. As a kid, my mother dressed me in clothes from The Salvation Army, so my participation in this challenge hit very close to home. The thought of being with these children and their families today was my inspiration throughout the challenge."

"We were thrilled when Target approached us with the opportunity to work with David Blaine on this challenge," said Major Hood. "His connection to The Salvation Army, and his own special way of creating magic made him the perfect person to raise awareness about our work and the challenges that many people face on an everyday basis."
