"Budding Magician Upstaged by Pro"

Monday June 5, 2006
I would never want to follow Dimmare’s fantastic dove act in a show. But the writer of this review is tough on Chase Curtis, who allowed Dimmare to perform in the middle of his "Illusions" show at the Casa Mañana Theatre in FortWorth, Texas. "If you're a 19-year-old magician still learning the biz, it's probably not a good idea to let an experienced pro perform during the middle of your set," says the writer. "...when Dimmare stole the show with his masterful sleight of hand, transforming doves, handkerchiefs and canes into one another, it highlighted the fact that Curtis has a long way to go." The writer also criticizes Curtis' "Tossed Out Deck" and floating candle.

First of all, I attended the show in which to critic also attended. His critique was extremely harsh. You cannot compare the dove act of James Dimmare to any of the routines or tricks that were a part of the Illusions show. The two are not of even the same genre or caliber. Personally, I did not find the dove act impressive at all…and audience member can only take so much of the appearance and vanishing of doves. It became old VERY quickly. Also, due to numerous technical difficulties during the show, I decided to come back again on Saturday night and was highly impressed! The questionable candle routine was not included, and as an individual who knows the toss out deck, there was no way that Chase could have prevented what happened. The audience members must have forgotten their cards. That is the only way that it would have failed. The illusions themselves were top quality. Mr. Curtis’ personality and spark on stage deserves to be recognized with positive criticism. He meshed extremely well with his dancers, particularly his leading female assistant. As a fellow critic, I believe that Mr. Curtis has learned from those mistakes that happened during the Saturday afternoon show. I am sure that the next time we see Chase, his name will be in lights and we will all be amazed! He has the great potential to be the next David Copperfield! I can’t wait to see what he brings the DFW metroplex next!
