Until recently, I have not been a fan of David Blaine. I shared Mr. Daniels assessment of Blaine’s work. While I do give Blaine credit for raising serious interest in magic and doing much for the art, I do not particularly care for his effects or style. To each his own, right? Well, I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Blaine at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In an unpublicized, little noticed event, David spent a couple hours on the burn unit at BAMC talking with Soldiers who have returned from Iraq and are surviving with severe burns. There were no cameras on the ward. David did not talk about himself or try to hype his next show. He showed genuine interest and concern in the lives of those men and women. He was unshaven. He wore jeans and a t-shirt. He was the classiest guy in the place. I saw a rare glimpse of him that day that will forever replace my vision of a camera aided Balducci. We may criticize his style or his magic, but let us not criticize David Blaine’s character.
While Blaine’s use of camera editing to achieve an effect was reprehensible-it breaks the promise to spectators at home that no “camera tricks” are used-I think that lots of the negative comments about Blaine simply stem from jealousy. I recall the event that you mention at the Medical Center. If I recall correctly, we linked to an article in a local paper or military publication. The event does say a lot about Blaine’s character. It’s a shining example of using magic in a positive and meaningful way.
Paul Daniel’s makes a living from slagging off other people – free publicity for him and his awful wife.
